Kildare Town sits right in the middle of Ireland, just off the M7 and on the main railway line from Dublin. That makes The Silken Thomas a handy base for day trips: spend the day exploring, then come back to Market Square for dinner and a comfortable night's sleep. Here are some of our favourite days out, all within easy reach.
Dublin
Leave the car behind and take the train from Kildare station straight into Dublin Heuston. Spend the day exploring the city's museums, galleries, shops and historic streets, then catch the train back for a quieter evening in Kildare.
Glendalough and the Wicklow Mountains
The monastic site at Glendalough, founded by St Kevin, sits in a beautiful glacial valley with two lakes and miles of walking trails. The drive takes you into the Wicklow Mountains, one of the most scenic parts of the country.
Kilkenny
Kilkenny is one of Ireland's most charming medieval cities, with Kilkenny Castle, narrow lanes, craft shops and lively pubs. It's an easy drive south from Kildare and makes a great full-day trip.
Castletown House and Russborough House
For grand houses and gardens, visit Castletown House in Celbridge, Ireland's largest Palladian country house, or Russborough House near Blessington, with its parkland, walled garden and hedge maze. Both are within an easy drive of Kildare Town.
Closer to home
You don't have to go far for a great day out. Kildare Village, St Brigid's Cathedral, the Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens and the Curragh are all within a few minutes of us. See our guide to things to do in Kildare Town.
Opening times and travel times vary, so check each attraction's website and plan your route before you set off.
