Kildare is one of Ireland's oldest towns, with more than 1,500 years of history around its Market Square. Most visitors come for Kildare Village or the races, but the town and the countryside around it have much more to offer. Here are our team's favourite things to do, all close to The Silken Thomas.
St Brigid's Cathedral and Round Tower
Just off Market Square, St Brigid's Cathedral stands on the site of the monastery St Brigid founded in the 5th century. Beside it is the town's round tower, one of the few in Ireland that visitors can climb, with wide views over Kildare and the Curragh from the top. Climbing is seasonal and weather-dependent, so check opening times before you visit.
Kildare Town Heritage Centre
A great first stop, right on Market Square and moments from our door. Its exhibitions tell the story of St Brigid, the town and its people, and the team can point you towards the best of the area.
Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens
Around 15 minutes from the hotel, the Irish National Stud is one of Kildare's most popular attractions. Take a guided tour to meet the thoroughbreds, then wander through the beautiful Japanese Gardens and St Fiachra's Garden. Nearby, St Brigid's Well is a peaceful spot that has drawn visitors for centuries.
The last tower of Kildare Castle
Kildare Castle was once a stronghold of the FitzGeralds, Earls of Kildare, and The Silken Thomas takes its name from one of the family's most famous sons. The last remaining tower of the castle stands right beside The Silken Rooms. Discover more in our history.
Walk the Curragh plains
Just outside town, the Curragh is a vast stretch of open grassland, perfect for a morning walk. Look out for the sheep that graze freely across it, and racehorses working on the gallops early in the day.
Shopping
Kildare Village, Ireland's leading designer outlet, is less than a 10-minute walk away; see our shopper's guide to Kildare Village. Within a 10-minute drive you'll also find Whitewater Shopping Centre in Newbridge and Newbridge Silverware, home to the Museum of Style Icons.
Eat and drink on Market Square
End the day back at The Silken Thomas, with a pint in our traditional Irish bar or dinner in our award-winning restaurant. Planning a longer stay? See our two-day weekend itinerary.
Opening times for attractions change through the seasons, so check each attraction's website before you visit.
