Horse Racing in Kildare: The Curragh, Punchestown & Naas

County Kildare is the heart of Irish horse racing. Here's how to make the most of a race day, with The Silken Thomas as your base.

Few places in the world have as strong a connection to the horse as County Kildare. Three of Ireland's best-known racecourses are within easy reach of Market Square, and the Irish National Stud, where future champions are bred, is just outside town. Whether you're coming for a festival or a quiet afternoon at the track, staying in Kildare Town puts you right in the middle of it.

The Curragh Racecourse

The Curragh is the home of Irish flat racing and hosts all five Irish Classics, including the Irish Derby. The redeveloped grandstand looks out over the famous Curragh plains, where racehorses have trained for centuries. The racecourse is around a 10-minute drive from The Silken Thomas, making it the easiest race day in the country to plan from here.

Punchestown Racecourse

Punchestown, near Naas, is the home of Irish jump racing. Its highlight is the Punchestown Festival each spring, five days of top-class National Hunt racing that draws racegoers from Ireland, the UK and beyond. Festival week is one of the busiest times of the year in Kildare, so book your room early.

Naas Racecourse

Naas is a friendly, popular course that hosts both flat and jump racing through the year, so there's often a meeting on when you visit. It's an easy drive up the M7 from Kildare Town.

The Irish National Stud

To see racing from the other side, visit the Irish National Stud, around 15 minutes from us. Guided tours introduce you to the thoroughbreds and the people who raise them, and your visit also includes the beautiful Japanese Gardens. Read more in our guide to things to do in Kildare Town.
