Irish National Stud & Japanese Gardens: Visitor Guide

Thoroughbreds, world-famous gardens and centuries of history, around 15 minutes from Market Square.

The Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens is one of County Kildare's best-loved attractions, and it's around 15 minutes from The Silken Thomas. In a single visit you can meet the thoroughbreds, explore the Irish Horse Museum and wander through two very different gardens, making it a perfect half-day out during your stay.

The Irish National Stud

The Irish National Stud is a working stud farm where some of Ireland's finest racehorses are bred. Guided tours take you around the stables and paddocks to meet the horses and hear their stories, and if you visit in spring you may see the year's foals out with their mothers. The Irish Horse Museum on site tells the story of the horse in Ireland.

The Japanese Gardens

Laid out in the early 1900s, the Japanese Gardens follow the journey of life from birth to the afterlife through a series of winding paths, stepping stones, bridges and tea houses. They're widely regarded as some of the finest Japanese gardens in Europe, and are beautiful in every season.

St Fiachra's Garden and St Brigid's Well

St Fiachra's Garden, named after the patron saint of gardeners, is a peaceful mix of woodland, lakes and stone cells. Close by, St Brigid's Well is a quiet spot that has drawn pilgrims and visitors for centuries, and it's well worth the short walk.

Tips for your visit

Allow two to three hours to see the stud, museum and both gardens without rushing.

Wear comfortable shoes. There's plenty of walking, much of it on gravel paths.

Pick your season. Spring is the time for foals, while summer and autumn bring the gardens at their most colourful.

Make a day of it. Combine your visit with St Brigid's Cathedral or Kildare Village, then come back to Market Square for dinner. See more in our guide to things to do in Kildare Town.

The Irish National Stud is open seasonally, so check opening dates and tour times on its website before you visit.
